Oh piracy, who shall save thee
Well, damnit, if Bram Cohen, the developer of
Bit Torrent, isn't safe from accusations of supporting piracy, who is, hmm?
Some pissant, somewhere, with too much time on his hand (and probably not enough woman) dug a document up out Bram's archives, that apparently proves that he supports illegal activities, even though it was written before he even developped Bit Torrent, and he has unwaveringly stated that it was never intended for such nefarious purpose. (It was the pirates, i tell ya, they stole my ship - which was never meant for pirating -- and now they're the scourge of the seven seas!) ahem. Or something like that.
Here's the document, judge for yourself.

I am a technological activist. I have a political agenda. I am in favor of basic human rights: to free speech, to use any information and technology, to purchase and use recreational drugs, to enjoy and purchase so-called 'vices', to be free of intruders, and to privacy.
I further my goals with technology. I build systems to disseminate information, commit digital piracy, synthesize drugs, maintain untrusted contacts, purchase anonymously, and secure machines and homes. I release my code and writings freely, and publish all of my ideas early to make them unpatentable.
Technology is not a panacea. I refuse to work on technology to track users, analyze usage patterns, watermark information, censor, detect drug use, or eavesdrop. I am not naive enough to think any of those technologies could enable a 'compromise'.
Despite my emphasis on technology, I do not view laws as inherently evil. My goals are political ones, even if my techniques are not. The only way to fundamentally succeed is by changing existing laws. If I rejected all help from the political arena I would inevitably fail.

Anecdotes and metaphors...
Well, my buddy
Arun always said I had the worst anecdotes and metaphors, and I think he was right. In an effort to explain the rise of Christianity to my girlfriend, and compared the
bible to a
hula hoop, and all the bishops, cardinals and popes to a bunch of greedy, underhanded hula hoop executives. Whew.
(By the way
Batman,
War of the Worlds, and
Fantastic Four in one month is too much to handle.)
Some thoughts
I walked into
Futureshop today, and asked the guy if they had the new
iPods in yet. "New iPods?" he responded, looking at me as if I'd just asked for a blowjob. "New how? Which ones do you mean?"
"Well, the new ones. Y'know, they've now got colour screens?" Aha, now he knows what I'm talking about. The iPod Photo!
No,
So I left, having been treated like an idiot by an idiot, more then just irritated that this dolt knew less about his products then I did.
It reminded me of when I was buying my Rio Carbon, and i asked him (same guy) if it worked well on a mac. I knew full well that it did, but I was interested in how well it worked, in terms of syncing music, contacts calendars, etc. He looked me straight in the eye, and said, "no, sorry Apple doesn't allow other MP3 players to work on their system." Can you imagine?
Dolt.
I bought it anyways, and it worked fine with iTunes, though admitedly not as well as an iPod, but that should be for granted. How is it possible for an employee of FUTUREshop (re: FUTURE!), nevertheless the guy in charge of MP3 players and other audio equipment to be so completely out of touch, especially on such popular products. AND rather than admit that he doesn't know for sure, or that he can't accurately answer my question, he lies to me.
Lies.
This is not cool.
I jumped the gun...

Well, I'm going back to future shop again tomorow. It seems
Apple has released an BIG update to their iPod line, and my recetly purchased grayscale display is horribly, horribly out of date.
This is also a huge day for nerds, due to the release of iTunes 4.9, which introduces
podcast support. This is really cool, and really, really easy to use, accesible from the iTunes Music Store.
My fav 'casts:
CBC radio 3
The Dawn and Drew Show
iTunes New Music Tuesday
The Ongoing History of New Music (from
The Edge)
I wish I had a cameraphone...
I just saw a fat, ugly kid wearing a T-shirt that says "i'ts not easy being easy."
He was staring dejectedly at the pavement at a bustop. Don't hate the playa, hate the game.
Podcasting
I'm thinking of starting a
podcast, but I'm not too sure what it should be about. Comic books? Music? Movies? Apple? I dunno. I'm thinking a variety of things, mostly interviews with people on all sorts of subjects, but I'd also like to throw in some music, but I don't know how to avoid copyrights...
Anybody who wants to help out, gimme a shout.
Space monkey
I just downloaded Adobe CS2 and installed it on my iMac G3, but when I tried to open on a G4 tower over the network, this thing popped up. WTF?
HAHAHAHAHA!!
Well, fuckers, I've done it! You all doubted, but I did it anyways! June 10, 2005, I installed Mac OS X Tiger on my 600 MHZ G3 iMac, and filled up my brand new 20 GB iPod with tons of music!
EAT IT, Kerr!
Not so Ready...
I've just learnt that a friend of mine,
Mark Ready, is in fact, not. Thats not his name. It's something he picked out. Himself. Ready, but not really. My mind is blown. Blo blo blown.

Home, Home on the range...
Well, I've been back in Canada for a while now, and its really, really weird; it feels like I've never left. I'm right back into that dull monotonous daily grind that I'd escaped for a month. It was so nice.. it felt like living. Going places, seeing things, even if they weren't always that interesting, it just felt natural, and now that I'm back home, at work my time is taken up doing empty, repetitive tasks, day in, day out, like so many cogs in the machine. This isn't the way I want to live.
